Cost of taxi in Quito. July 2012.

* In the daytime (6:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.) the taxi cost is about $8-$10 per hour,
depending on the taximeter and traffic. So if your trip takes 15 minutes you are supposed to pay $2-$2.50.

* When I stop yellow (with a four digits number - legitimate) taxi on a street: I always ask - taximeter (to turn on)? If the driver tells me that there is no taximeter (doesn't work or whatever) I offer to pay him $9 per hour, prorated to my trip. Sometimes we disagree and I get out of the taxi.

* When we use the same cooperative, for example "Condado shopping", I always give the taxi drivers a generous tip. A majority of them (taxi drivers from "Condado shopping" cooperative) already know us and some of them, sometimes, prefer us to other waiting customers.

* When it is raining, no matter day or night, the fare goes up.

* At night (6:30 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.) the fare is negotiable. It is more expensive than daytime.

* When you pick up a taxi at airport, keep in mind, that they have to pay for the parking there, so your fare will be more than for a taxi picked up outside of the airport.

* It doesn't matter if you are "tercera edad" or not. You are suppose to pay the full fare for the taxi.

* When you go from Quito to the "Valley" or "Mitad del Mundo", the taxi driver will tell you price for a round trip (including his trip back from your far away destination). This is normal.
