Renter's review of our La Ronda monthly rental in Quito. May 2012.

From Judith and Jackie ---2 sixty-four year old women from Portland Oregon

About a year ago a friend and I began investigating the idea of retiring in Ecuador. We had heard so many good things about the country and are looking for an affordable place to live on our retirement incomes. As I was searching the internet the "Gods" must have been looking over me when I came across Lillya and Leo's blogspot about Life in Quito.
Quito had been the focus of the place to begin our exploration of the country as it is located centrally to the places we had read about and wanted to visit, and we would be flying in and out of Quito from our home in Portland. After reading much of Lillya's blog I contacted her with questions...many questions! So many questions in fact I was beginning to feel a pest. To my surprise and delight she continued to answer all my questions without the least bit of hesitation, providing me with useful and helpful information. After a few months we decided to book our tickets and I made arrangements to rent Lillya's apartment for the 5 weeks we would be in Ecuador. This was a fantastic decision on my part. Coming to a country where I had never been...not knowing anyone... yes- a great decision!
Upon our arrival (at something like 1:30 in the morning) Lillya and Leo were there to greet us at the airport and transport us to the apartment. Note- it was 1:30 in the morning!
Now- about our home away from home--for this is what it certainly feels like. The apartment could not be located any more perfectly for whatever one might be looking for in Quito...or if you are like us and wanted to travel in and out of Quito to explore a bit of Ecuador. The apartment is located on a single side street...not a busy main street. But everything one might need is close within walking distance. Up a short hill and around the corner one will find small shops for daily essentials, a few pastry shops, fresh fruits from vendors, small vendors selling various foods. In the other direction.. down the hill and around the corner is the refurbished historic area... a long street with many different restaurants, gift shops selling local art, music in the streets and (my favorite) a gourmet chocolate shop with chocolate cafe adjoining. A bit talking a 15 to 20 minute walk can get to one or two of the local historical plaza's where you can visit the tourist office, more shops or just sit in the plaza area and people watch. In this location one can jump on a 2-deck tour bus for $6.00 and it will take you all around Quito to view many of the historic areas. Up the hill from the apartment is a bus stop or one can catch a taxi and get most anywhere in Quito for $4-5.
Again, and I cannot stress the fact enough.. for us this was the most perfect place to be located.
Our first venture away from the city was heading North to Otovola and Cotacachi.. there we stayed in a Hostal... basically the same price as our apartment...we came back to Quito a day early. The place smelled of mold, was uncomfortable and noisy.
Next we traveled South for 10 days while we visited Cuenca, Loja and Vilcabamba. Having experienced a Hostal we chose instead hotels for more than twice the price and half the comfort.
Needless to say we were overjoyed to return to our home away from home. Here we have everything.. a clean, cozy 2- bedroom apartment where we do not have to listen to one another's snoring, total security as the apartment is within a gated area with 24 hour guards outside as well, a full kitchen with all that is needed for cooking home cooked meals, comfortable beds, a new washing machine for doing our laundry, a flat screen t.v., a little sitting deck for evening tea, free wifi, a small library of books for reading and books on local things to see, an in-house phone...and best of all...a landlady who will help you ever step of the way and make your stay in Ecuador enjoyable and pleasant and the trip you deserve. We will most certainly bet we will!
Thanks Lillya- you are the "best"
