Crime in Ecuador. April 2012.

In Ecuador, cash is the king, unlike the United States which is a mostly cashless/credit card society.  Another interesting fact of life in Ecuador is that thievery of possessions (or money) less than $500, is not a punishable crime.
Bottom line - buy yourself a money belt when you are traveling to Ecuador and keep your money there when you traveling by bus (inner city and between cities).  Our acquaintance was robbed few weeks ago on the bus on his way to another city. His jacket was stolen with money in the pockets while he was snoozing. It was literally - you snooze your lose situation.
Your possessions had better be in the over-head shelf above and in front of you within eyesight, not behind you when you are on the bus.  Another acquaintance was robbed on the bus - their bags were on the over-head shelf above and behind them and a thief cut a hole in one of their bags and got away with some of their stuff.
