Our experience with medical insurance in Quito, Ecuador

Right now we don't have medical insurance in Ecuador. We bought Humana medical insurance (for Hospital Metropolitano) for the year 2009. We paid premiums, $169 per month for two of us and when the time came to use the doctors, Humana refused to pay for the routine exams.
Humana rejected our claims, we rejected Humana.
And to add an insult to the injury - when we had Humana and went to the approved doctors at the Hospital Metropolitano, the visit to the doctor would take 20-30 minutes, the paperwork in one case took more than an hour. And it still was rejected!!!
Well, in 2010 being without insurance, we spend about $600 in medical expenses.  This figure includes visits to the dentist for both of us, visits to the family doctor and lab tests for both of us, and three visits to the dermatologist (and the course of the treatment) for one of us.
